Prescriptions

Electronic Prescribing Services

Most prescriptions are now processed electronically, offering you two options:

  1. You can nominate a pharmacy or dispenser to receive all your prescriptions electronically. Once issued, your prescription will be sent directly to the nominated dispenser, allowing you to collect your medications or appliances without needing a paper prescription.
  2. Alternatively, you can decide each time you receive a prescription where you want it to be dispensed. You will receive a paper copy with a unique barcode that any pharmacy or dispenser in England can scan to access your prescription from the secure NHS database.

Paper prescriptions will still be available in special circumstances, but the majority of prescriptions will be processed electronically.

Choosing a Pharmacy

If you receive regular prescriptions or currently use a prescription collection service (where a pharmacy picks up prescriptions from your GP practice), selecting a pharmacy to dispense all your prescriptions can save you time by eliminating unnecessary visits to your GP.

You will continue to order your repeat prescriptions as usual, but they will be sent electronically to your chosen pharmacy or dispenser. This means you won’t need to pick up a paper repeat prescription from your GP practice.

Cancelling or Altering Your Chosen Pharmacy

You have the flexibility to change or cancel your chosen dispenser at any time. Just inform us before placing your next prescription order.

Please allow sufficient time for the update to ensure that your next prescription is sent to the correct location.

Prescription Request Processing Times

  • Prescriptions placed before 10.30 – will be processed that day
  • Prescriptions placed after 10.30 – will be processed on the next working day
  • Prescriptions will take 2 working days from the time that they are processed

Methods of Ordering Repeat Prescriptions

  1. Patient Access
  2. NHS App
  3. PATCHs
  4. Submit your computerized printed slip, first tick the items you need and place it in the box outside or post it to us.

Please not that medication request will NOT be taken over the phone due to patient safety reasons.

Urgent Prescription Requests

Requests outside the normal prescription protocol significantly impact both doctors and administrative staff, increasing the risk of medication errors.

It is the patient’s responsibility to request repeat prescriptions in time. Please do not allow yourself to run out of your medications. If you do run out of your medication, you can request an emergency prescriptionin person, at reception. You will be asked to complete an Emergency Prescription Request which will then be passed to a clinician. Please telephone the surgery after 5pm to see if your prescription is ready. The Practice will endeavour to fulfill your request on the day, however this is not guaranteed.

This policy ensures safe prescribing and optimizes access to the clinical team. We ask that you respect our staff who adhere to practice protocols for urgent medication requests.

PLEASE NOTE – an emergency prescription will only cover for 3 days’ medication – you will still need to request your medication routinely

From the 1 April, the Government is launching the HRT Pre-Payment Certificate (PPC) to reduce prescription costs for women receiving Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

The HRT PPC will be available to buy in one single payment online at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc, or in-person at some pharmacies. You can call 0300 330 2089 for help and support.

Before buying an HRT PPC, you should check if:

  2. Your medicine is covered by the HRT PPC. For a list of eligible HRT medication, visit: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc-medicines
  3. A 3 or 12 month PPC is more suitable. It covers all NHS prescriptions, not just HRT items. Visit: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc

Medication Review

Please check when your medication review is due. Reviews are typically conducted every six or twelve months, depending on your medication. On the white side of your prescription, you will find a list of your repeat medications with a review date next to each item, indicating when your review is due.
